Ardgowan Nation Historic Site of Canada

“Once the home of William Henry Pope, on the the Fathers of Confederation from Prince Edward Island, the Ardgowan house is an example of a “picturesque cottage” or cottage ornée, a style once popular as a rural residence. The home was host to spectacular luncheons, lavish entertainment, a horse and carriage and a divine library. The sandstone carriage step is still at the National Historic Site today.”

Beaconsfield Historic House

“Built in 1877 for a wealthy shipbuilder and merchant, Beaconsfield stands as an enduring symbol of Victorian elegance. With twenty-five rooms, eight fireplaces and imported chandeliers, Beaconsfield was one of Charlottetown’s finest homes. Today, the house is open to the public for tours and hosts special events in its Carriage House. A bookstore with a variety of Island publications is on site”

Le pluvier siffleur, un petit oiseau de rivage en voie de disparition à l’échelle planétaire, installe son nid dans les endroits plats et sablonneux, où du gravier et sed morceaux de coquillages fournissent un excellent camouflage. En fait, les nids et les oeufs sont si bien cachés que les gens risquent de les détruire sans s’en apercevoir.

Chaque année, les gens, les prédateurs et le mauvais temps font des victimes, de sorte qu’il est difficile pour les pluviers de couver et d’élever leaurs petits.

Le saviez-vous?

~ Le pluvier siffleur peut marcher et se nourrir quelques heures après sa naissance.

~En moins de 6 semaines, la taille des oisillons décuple, en préparation pour la migration.

~ Les oisillons aiment se tenir sous le ventre des adultes pour se protéger des éléments (ils aiment être couvés). Un adulte couve souvent les quatre oisillons à la fois. Ainsi, si vous voyez un pluvier à dix pattes, ce n’est pas une hallucination!

~ Assistez sur place aux efforts de protection du pluvier siffleur! Book signing with Dr. William O’Flaherty

On November 3rd Indigo Book Store is hosting a book signing with Dr. William O’Flaherty, author of Tomcats and House Calls: Memoir of a Country Doctor. “ The collection of short stories chronicle heartwarming, humorous, and thought provoking moments during his forty year career as a country doctor in Newfoundland and New Brunswick.”

The signing will begin at 1:00 pm and will end at 3:00 pm at the Indigo store in Charlottetown (465 University Avenue).

Countdown of PEI’s Top Five Rarest Animals: #5 – The Water Shrew

Water shrews are large, measuring 14 to 16 cm in length. The have long tails (6 to 7 cm) that is 40% of their body length. They have soft, dark fur, a pointed snout, tiny eyes, concealed ears and five slightly webbed toes on each foot. Water shrews are insectivores, and will feed on slugs, earthworms, spiders,  leeches and snails. These small mammals do not hibernate and use their water courses even under ice.
